The Elixir Project
11 Feb 2009
Teenagers from Sherman Cymru’s Acting Out Cardiff will get their first taste of opera this month in a special collaboration with Welsh National Opera on The Elixir Project.
The award-winning Acting Out Cardiff, made up of young people aged 14-16, have worked closely with Welsh National Opera’s WNO Max on an artform which until now has been alien to them. However, with a privileged look behind the scenes at WNO and a lot of imagination, Acting Out Cardiff have created a modern twist on The Elixir of Love, taking it from a classic opera based in the Italian Riviera, straight into a state of the art games console.
Acting Out Co-ordinator Jason Camilleri comments:
“It’s been fantastic to see the creative team from Welsh National Opera and the young people on the course engage so strongly with each other to create the production. The group have been taken out of their comfort zone and placed into a world of movement and song, but with a great script and a catalogue of very catchy numbers, I think it’s going to be a very unique piece of theatre!”
Acting Out Cardiff is part of the Cardiff 14-19 Learning Pathways Network, and sees young people aged 14-16 attend weekly workshops at Sherman and study towards a BTEC qualification in Performing Arts away from the traditional school environment.
WNO MAX produces an award-winning programme of activity beyond the main stage, maximising the resources of the company and creating an extraordinary range of opera, embracing diverse participants, artists and audiences.
