Sherman Cymru Staff Walk 26 Mile Marathon For Redevelopment Campaign

21 Jun 2010

Sherman Cymru staff and supporters took part in a gruelling 26 mile marathon walk on Saturday 19 June as part of the fundraising campaign for the theatre building redevelopment.

Following the success of previous fundraising events, eight current and former Sherman Cymru staff (and a dog!) took to the road again to raise more sponsorship money for the redevelopment of the theatre by participating in a 12 hour walk along the scenic Taff Trail from Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff Bay.

Sherman Cymru supporters were also out to encourage the walkers along the Taff Trail route and give them a heroes welcome in Cardiff Bay at the end of the day. One of the walkers was 58 retired Finance Manager, Mike Gowing, who decided to rejoin the Sherman Cymru walkers after leaving the company in December 2009. Mike Gowing comments:

“Up until my retirement in December 2009 I had worked for the Sherman for about 8 years. During that time I had some magical moments and met some amazing people. I now have the opportunity to repay that experience by raising funds for the new theatre. I ran the Cardiff half marathon in October, but this walk was a lot, lot harder, even if the pace was a bit slower. It was a great team effort by everyone involved, but a special thank you should be made to Suzanne Carter and Margaret Jones for organising the event - they literally went the extra mile - or two.”

So far, Sherman Cymru staff have raised over £4000 just from staff fundraising initatives, which have included sponsored bike rides, running in the Cardiff Half Marathon and a sponsored abseil off the Sherman building in the middle of Winter last year. Head of Development at Sherman Cymru, Emma Goad comments:

“The staff at Sherman Cymru are really passionate about the company and the building, which shows in their dedication and the amount of time and effort they have put into raising money towards the redevelopment of the theatre. We are pleased with the support we have received not only from staff but audiences and supporters of Sherman Cymru over the last few months. Although we have raised over 80% of the money needed to complete the redevelopment of the theatre we still need to raise just under £1.3 million.”
