More Awards For Deep Cut
27 Aug 2008
Sherman Cymru return to Wales this month with Deep Cut, a new play about the events surrounding the infamous Deepcut Barracks, following its success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at which is won an incredible 5 awards.
Deep Cut has been awarded a Fringe First award, a Herald Angel award, the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award as well as both Best Actor (Ciaran McIntyre) and Best Actress (Rhian Blythe) Awards with The Stage. Deep Cut also sold out at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and has received great critical acclaim. Director of Sherman Cymru, Chris Ricketts, comments:
“The response to Deep Cut has been exceptional. It's a strong, potent piece of theatre that addresses important areas of public life through a very human story. Producing it has been a real honour for all of us involved.”
Deep Cut, written by Philip Ralph, uses original source material and powerful first hand testimonies of those closest to Private Cheryl James, one of four young soldiers who died from gunshot wounds in unexplained circumstances between 1995 and 2002.
Although The Blake Review, an independent review of the deaths, concluded that Cheryl probably committed suicide, her family continue to fight for a full public inquiry to gain answers from the people responsible for their daughter’s care. Writer Philip Ralph comments:
“We’re here because four young people died and the government had no interest in finding out why. We represent those four people and their families and are here to tell their story. Hopefully with the help of these awards, and the support of the press, we can tell that story to many more people.”
Deep Cut is on at Clwyd Theatr Cymru on 9 – 13 September, and then returning to Sherman, Cardiff on 16 – 27 September.
