Local schoolchildren from Langstone Primary have helped support their local theatre by raising funds towards the redevelopment of Sherman Cymru’s building.

Sherman Cymru, South Wales’s only producing theatre building, will undergo a massive £4.6 million refurbishment of its theatre over the next 18 months, which will see the venue transformed and become a landmark building in the Cathays area of Cardiff.
Pupils and staff at Langstone Primary School, Newport took part in Sherman Cymru’s School Challenge and hosted a non-school uniform day on Friday 26 March 2010.
Thousands of children visit Sherman Cymru every year for a well-deserved festive treat at one of the company’s Christmas productions. Langstone Primary has been bringing children to Sherman Cymru for over 14 years, providing children as young as four with a real theatre experience.
Head Teacher of Langstone Primary, Beverley Cole said:
“We are pleased to be having a non-uniform day in support of the refurbishment of the new theatre. Pupils from Langstone have enjoyed the opportunity of seeing live theatre for many years and are pleased to know that thse opportunities will continue.”
Sherman Cymru is encouraging local schools who have regularly attended the theatre to help with the fundraising through the Schools Challenge. Schools can organise their own fundraising event and all money raised will go towards the redevelopment of the theatre building. As part of the Schools Challenge, Langstone Primary learnt about the theatre’s new look and the importance of their fundraising, and they also had a visit from Sherman Cymru’s Pink VW Campervan fundraising mascot, which has been touring around South Wales raising awareness of the redevelopment campaign.
One Langstone pupil, said, “I can’t wait to come back and see the new Sherman. Its going to look really great.”
