Cityscape Writer Tracy Harris Premieres At The Captial Fringe Festival, Washington D.C

28 Jul 2010

Playwright Tracy Harris (whose play No Vacancies was performed in June as part of Sherman Cymru’s Cityscape) recently attended the 5th Capital Fringe Festival at Washington D.C for the US premiere of the cloak room.

the cloak room headlined Sherman Cymru’s Egin: SpringBoard event in 2009 and featured at last year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival at Washington D.C. Tracy Harris comments:

"Seeing the US premiere of the play was a great experience. It was good to see it and to have the opportunity to see my work outside Wales, the actors did a great job and the Fringe is a buzzing place for new writing. The first few nights sold out and a Danny Glover came to see it on opening night, which was a nice surprise!''

New writing is central to the work of Sherman Cymru and it is important that the work of dramatists has a continuing life after an initial production, as Literary Manager Siân Summers comments:

"It's fantastic for Tracy and for us at Sherman Cymru to see her work being exposed to a wider audience internationally, especially as new writing is so often consigned to the shelf after its first outing. Tracy's writing is vibrant and lyrical, and it's great to see her talent recognised from across the Atlantic.

the cloak room received a tremendous reception when it was performed in Venue 2 last summer, and we were all really pleased when we realised that it was to be staged as part of The Capital Fringe Festival.”

Performed by the New York state based The Mighty Theatre Company, the cloak room takes an intriguing look at a man haunted by people and events from his past, so much so that he is unable to engage in his own life. Ruby, his partner, is on a mission to try and exorcise him from those ghosts once and for all.

the cloak room ran from 9-24 July at Fort Fringe - The Bedroom, Washington D.C. More information about the 5th Capital Fringe Festival can be found on www.capfringe.org
