Welsh Assembly Government Boosts Sherman Cymru's Redevelopment Campaign

15 Mar 2010

Funding for Sherman Cymru's long-awaited redevelopment has been boosted by a £130,000 allocation from the Welsh Assembly Government.

Sherman Cymru, South Wales’s only producing theatre building, will undergo a massive £4.6 million refurbishment of its theatre over the next 18 months, which will see the venue transformed and become a landmark building in the Cathays area of Cardiff.

The £130,000 Welsh Assembly Government Grant comes at a crucial stage of the fundraising campaign. Last year, Sherman Cymru was awarded a Capital Lottery Grant from the Arts Council of Wales that amounted to 74% of the total cost needed for the redevelopment. This left the company with a target of £1.5 million to turn the plans into reality and give Cardiff an incredible producing theatre building. The grant from the Welsh Assembly Government gives the campaign a great boost, and complements the incredible support that Sherman Cymru is receiving from the public through its various appeals.

Chairman of Sherman Cymru, Emyr Jenkins said;
"We are most grateful to the Heritage Minister for this timely boost to our plans to develop in the Capital City a producing theatre of which we can all be proud. In times of economic hardship, the arts become an even more important element in our daily lives and we appreciate very much this demonstration of the Welsh Assembly Government's practical support."

The Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones said:
“I visited Sherman Cymru last year and heard about their ambitious proposals.  I am pleased that the Welsh Assembly Government has been able to contribute to its fundraising and hope that this support will be matched by other contributions.  Sherman is a much-loved Cardiff venue, and the company will not be resting on its laurels during the coming closure.  I am very much looking forward to Sherman Cymru's work during the closure of the building, for example, the collaboration with the new National Theatre Wales in the autumn."
